Pediatric Sedation Dentistry in Gastonia, NC
At South Gaston Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that some children feel nervous or fearful about visiting the dentist. That’s why we offer safe and effective sedation options to help make dental care a more comfortable and pleasant experience.
Whether your child needs a simple procedure or more extensive treatment, our team will work with you to choose the right level of sedation based on your child’s age, health, and individual needs. Our goal is to provide gentle care in a calm and supportive environment—so every child can have a positive and productive dental visit.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and gentle way to help children relax during dental visits. It’s inhaled through a small mask placed over the nose and takes effect quickly. Children stay awake and can respond to directions, but they feel calm and comfortable. Once the procedure is over, the gas wears off within a few minutes. Nitrous oxide is a great option for children with mild anxiety or those undergoing shorter treatments.
IV Sedation
For children who are very anxious, have special healthcare needs, or need more extensive dental work, IV sedation may be recommended. With IV sedation, a medicine is given through a small tube in the child’s arm or hand, helping them stay deeply relaxed during treatment. A trained anesthesia provider monitors your child’s breathing, heart rate, and vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure safety. IV sedation is often used for longer or more complex treatments.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia allows a child to sleep completely through a dental procedure. This option is typically used when children are too young to cooperate, have special needs, or need significant dental work that can’t be safely done while awake. Your child won’t feel pain or remember the procedure, and we work closely with parents to ensure a smooth recovery. Post-treatment, you should plan to take your child straight home so they can rest and let the effects of the anesthesia dissipate.
Hospital Sedation
In certain cases, dental care may be provided in a hospital setting. This is usually recommended for children with complex medical needs or when it’s safest to perform treatment under the supervision of a hospital team. Our practice has a partnership with a nearby hospital to ensure your child receives the highest level of care in a safe, well-equipped environment. We’ll guide you through every step of the process, from pre-op instructions to follow-up care at home.
